Situated in the north-west corner of Italy, Turin - gateway to the Italian Alps - has long been a favourite spot amongst tourists. Nestled on the banks of the Po River, Turin was once the capital of Italy and has retained much of its grandeur - the Royal House of Savoy residences are UNESCO World Heritage listed, whilst the Basilica of Superga contains the tombs of a large number of Savoy Dukes. The Turin shroud, famed for having what is allegedly the face of Jesus impressed in the fabric, is held in the Cathedral of St John the Baptist. Other impressive buildings include the Museo Egizio, a museum which has the largest collection of Egyptian relics outside of Egypt; the Palazzo Reale, a seventeenth-century Palace; and the Palatine Towers, a well-preserved collection of Roman buildings. Milan is a few hours drive north-east from Turin, whilst the coastal city of Genoa is within easy day-trip distance to the South. The French-Italian border is also close by.
Turin is serviced by the Turin International Airport (Aeroporto Internazionale di Torino-Castelle Sandro Pertini, or Torino-Caselle Airport). The complex is located several kilometres to the north of the city, off of the Raccordo Austostradale Torino-Aeroporto di Caselle. The airport, serving over three and a half million passengers every year, has a single terminal and runway and is visited by British Airways (London-Gatwick) and Ryan Air (Bristol, London-Stansted) amongst others. Car hire is the best option for exploring the surrounding region, and the airport has a number of car rental companies on site. Auto Europa, Budget, Avis, Europcar, Thrifty, Maggiore, Hertz and Sixt all have offices in the multi-storey car park opposite the terminal.
